STERLING SILVER OXIDIZATION:
Sterling silver, which is the precious metal most commonly used for Expression Obsession jewellery, is made out of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.
This incorporation of copper makes the jewellery more durable, making it a popular choice among jewellers. Over time, copper will naturally oxidize as it interacts with oxygen, leaving a “tarnished” look:
Oxidization is a long and slow process, and isn’t something to worry about as it can be easily cleaned and repolished. That being said, here are some tips to keep your silver looking it's most beautiful by preventing tarnish:
STERLING SILVER CARE:
- Wear your silver! Your natural oils act as a barrier against the oxidization
- Avoid chemicals and abrasives: Remove your silver jewellery when you use soap, hand sanitizer, lotion, as well as any other beauty or cleaning products
- Keep your silver dry: You can remove your silver when you go swimming, take a shower, or wash your hands. Make sure to give your silver a good dry when it does get wet
- Store your silver in a cool, dry, and dark place (even better if you have an air tight container laying around)
- Clean your silver regularly (depends on use, but about a month or so is a good starting point)
STERLING SILVER CLEANING:
- To clean your silver, use warm water, mild dish soap (for example, unscented, chemical free, organic baby soap), and a very soft toothbrush
- For a more stubborn tarnish, you can soak your pieces in a mixture of vinegar and baking soda before cleaning with a soft toothbrush
- After cleaning, dry your pieces thoroughly, and restore shine with the polishing cloth that came with your order
- Staying on top of your cleaning will prevent oxidization stains from getting too stubborn and hard to remove
